Tony Lee Asher was born at Murdock, Illinois, May 2, 1891. When seven years of age, he came with his parents to Kansas, where he had lived ever since.
He was a member of the Baptist Church at Belpre. On June 19, 1918, he married Miss Cornelia Eldred, who for several years had lived at Belpre, but at the time of their marriage was living at Emporia.
He was inducted into the military service of the U.S. on June 24, 1918, being stationed at Camp Funston in the 30th Company, 164 Depot Brigade, but later transferred to the Machine Gun Company, 352 Infantry, 88th Division at Camp Dodge, Iowa. On Aug. 8, he left Camp Dodge for France, where he succumbed to pneumonia on October 6, 1918, at the Heriecourt hospital, Haute Saone, France, age 27 years, 5 months and 4 days.
His wife, Mrs. Cornelia Asher of Paola, Kansas, his father and mother, Mrs. and Mrs. Lewis Asher of Garfield, one brother, Frank Asher of Great Bend, and two sisters, Miss Retha Asher of Garfield and Mrs. Arthur Thompson of Alexander, Kansas, besides a host of friends are left to mourn by the untimely taking away of this splendid young man.
The funeral service was held Tuesday afternoon at the Methodist church conducted by the pastor, Rev. R.L. Cecil.
The body was escorted by a number of soldiers of this community and the firing squad from Belpre. At the lowering of the casket, taps were blown.
Our deepest sympathy accorded to those who mourn his going. The march of another soldier is ended, his battles are fought, his victories are won. His spirit has answered the call of the Captain of all armies.
