Thomas W. Hewitt departed this life at his home near Mill Run on Monday May 16, 1898, aged 82 years. He was the brother of John B. who died last autumn and William B. who died early in the spring. The death of these three brothers leave but Franklin E. in the West and Mrs. Loana Brown of Mt. Pleasant as the only surviving children of Ebenezer Hewitt who came as a pioneer to Bennets Branch in 1818.

Uncle Tommy as he was generally called, was born in what is called Huston Township and lived here his lifetime. In his earlier years he was a full sharer in the hardships of the first settlers of this valley and like the others grew up a rugged man fully fitted for the battle of life.

He was married about 63 years ago to Annie Washburn. The children born were Tillie, Mrs. W.J. Leahy, Clemmie, Mrs. W.J. King, Mrs. J.R. King, Ezekial, Thomas, Charles, and Ebenezer who was accidentally killed in the lumber woods.

Uncle Tommy was converted early in life and became a local preacher in the Methodist church. He frequently filled the pulpit of this and other denominations and by his original and evangelical sermons of his congregations. For several years before his death he was unable to even attend the meetings of his beloved church, but his license as Local Preacher was in full force at his death.

He was an active citizen in public offices of School Director and Tax Collector. In politics he was an ardent, Republican from the birth of the party until his death.

The paralytic stroke that caused his death came upon him while engaged in feeding his stock at the home farm. He lingered without taking any nourishment until he quietly passed away.

The funeral was held in the M.E. Church at Penfield on Wednesday, May 18. Rev. Guldin in charge, E.S. Flegal Director. The attendance was very large.

The burial was in Hewitt Cemetery near Tyler.
