Born in Derby, Ct. While young, his father removed with his family to a farm in Galen Township near the village of Clyde in Wayne County, New York. He married Mary Redfield in 1828 and in 1837 they removed to Marshall, Calhoun County, Michigan where he engaged in milling and mercantile pursuits. Around 1838, he was elected as one of the first deacons of the newly founded Presbyterian Church.
