Civil War Union Army Officer. Lt. Henry M. Baldwin, a battle casualty at age 24, had been commissioned a 2nd Lieutenant in Battery M, 5th United States Regular Artillery, on May 14, 1861. He served until he was mortally wounded at the October 19, 1864 Battle of Cedar Creek, Virginia, and died 20 days after the engagement. The young officer was the son of Caleb D. and Susan (nee Moore) Baldwin, both of whom survived him.
The marble obelisk honoring his memory is adorned with an officer's sabre and sash below a crest of oak leaves with crossed cannons. Battery Baldwin, which existed in Fort Winfield Scott, San Francisco, California, from 1902 to 1920, was named after him.
