Jeannie Garth Motlow of Lynchburg,
widow of former State Sen. J. Reagor
Motlow, died Thursday (Aug. 17, 1989)
at Harton Regional Medical Center in
Tullahoma at the age of 90.

Widely known as "Miss Jeannie" she
was long active in community affairs
in Lynchburg and Moore County. She
was instrumental in acquiring a public
Library in Lynchburg, which was named
in honor of her and Sen. Motlow in
1964.

She was named chairman of the first
County library board in 1954 and also
was a former chairman of the Highland
Rim Regional Library Commission and
Archives Commission. In 1982, she
was named chairman emeritus of
the Moore County Library Board.

A native of Union City, she was a graduate
of Vanderbilt University, Nashville and
was a member of Lynchburg Methodist
Church.

She and Mr. Motlow, who were married
in 1928, moved to Lynchburg in the
early 1930s when Mr. Motlow became
a partner in Jack Daniel Distillery.

Mr. and Mrs. Motlow, and other members
of the Motlow family, donated the land
on which Motlow State Community
College is located.

Services for Mrs. Motlow were held
Aug. 20 at Harrison Funeral Home with
the Rev. Eddie Smotherman and the Rev.
David Spencer officiating. Burial was in
Lynchburg Cemetery.

Survivors include a sister, Helen Garth
Mitchell of Union City.
