Fanny's father died while still in the service at the close of the Civil War when she was about four years old. She she was raised by her mother and step-father, Caleb Ball who died in 1881. She lived with her mother with the support of her late father's Civil War pension and appears to have worked as a seamstress and milliner. Her final illness was aggravated by an accident in which she was struck by an automobile which fractured both of her legs. She married Frank J. Popham in Clark County, Indiana in 1886 and divorced him in Louisville in 1895.
