Mrs. Jenkins dies in Night At Residence

Mrs. Bess Downs Jenkins of 1103 West Barraque Street, who had been prominently associated will treatment of crippled children in Arkansas, died at her home last night. She apparently suffered a heart attack.

Mrs. Jenkins was born in Pine Bluff and attended Annunciation Academy. Her parents were the late Matt and Betty Vernon Downs. She was married May 5, 1909, in Pine Bluff to Dr. John S. Jenkins, a Pine Bluff orthopedic surgeon. He died December 1, 1949.

In 1926, Mrs. Jenkins organized the Arkansas Society for Crippled Children. This was the first organized effort in the state for treatment of crippled children. In 1939, she began the Sunshine School in the old Pine Street School here. The Sunshine School is now located at Ninth Avenue and Cherry Street. Mrs. Jenkins was chief administrator of the school since its founding.

Mrs. Jenkins was a director of the National United Cerebral Palsy Association, vice president of the United Cerebral Palsy Associations of Arkansas and president of the Jefferson County Cerebral Palsy Association.

She was a member of Trinity Episcopal Church, the United Daughters of the Confederacy, The Current Events Club, Mathontes Club, Jefferson County Medical Auxiliary, and Past Presidents of the American Legion Auxiliary. She was an honorary member of the Pilots Club.

There were no survivors.

Funeral services will be at 4 p.m. tomorrow at Trinity Episcopal Church by Reverend T. P. Devlin. Burial will be in Bellwood Annex Cemetery by Ralph Robinson & Son Mortuary.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be sent to the Arkansas Society for Crippled Children.
