Mr. Thomas Birch, head of the firm of Thomas Birch & Sons, auctioneers, No. 110 Chestnut street, died on Wednesday at his residence, No. 1717 Vine street, after a short sickness.
Mr. Birch was born in Philadelphia in 1810 and was the son of Thomas Birch, the marine painter. He first opened an auction store on Second street, in the "Old Coffee House" where he carried on business for several years. In Politics Mr. Birch was a Republican. He joined the Union League soon after its organization, and was a member of it at the time of his death. Before the city was consolidated he was a member of Councils and accepted the position of clerk of Common Council. He was at one time chief of the Highway Department. Afterward, when given the Republican nomination for sheriff, he withdrew in favor of his friends William H. Kern who was nominated and elected."
