Rites for Pioneer Pasadena Pastor Scheduled Sunday

The Rev. Dr. Frank Gilbert Haven Stevens, resident of Pasadena since 1884 and active in the Methodist ministry from 1898 until his retirement in 1957, died Thursday night in a Pasadena rest home. He had observed his 91st birthday on August 27. Twice the pastor of Lake Avenue Methodist Church, now the Holliston Avenue Methodist Church, Dr. Stevens was the founding minister of the St. James Methodist Church and served it until his retirement. He had continued to teach a Sunday School class there and taught a class on the first Sunday of every month.

Services Sunday

Funeral services are to be held at 2:30 p.m. Sunday in St. James, with the Rev. Dr. Mortimer C. Dean officiating. Dr. Stevens was a member of the second class graduated from Pasadena High School in 1892 and was the oldest living alumnus of the school. He was graduated from the University of Southern California in 1899 and had been assigned as a minister at Ocean Park in 1898 before his graduation. He was graduated from Drew Theological Seminary in 1902 and while studying there was assigned to pastorates on Long Island.

Born Aug. 27, 1874, Dr. Stevens came by covered wagon to Pasadena with his parents, Mr. and Mrs. F. D. Stevens in 1884, before the city was incorporated. His father operated the Stevens Hardware Store here for many years.

Anniversary Ride

On Jan. 5, 1949, Dr. Stevens rode a bicycle from Commercial Street and Alameda Avenue in Los Angeles 18 miles to Ocean Park, repeating the same trip he had made 50 years before to preach his first sermon while a senior at USC.

He was superintendent of the Long Beach District and Pasadena District of the Southern California - Arizona Conference of the Methodist Church for six years and was a trustee of the conference for many years. He had served as a member of the National Board of World Service and Finance and was five times a delegate to the International Conference, including the historical Uniting Conference in 1939 when the three branches of the Methodist Church joined.

World War I Chaplain

He served as a chaplain in World War I and was a member of the American Legion and chaplain of the Fresno post while serving a pastorate there. He was married April 13, 1910 to Miss Adelaide Harrison who was pianist of the First Methodist Church in Santa Monica where Dr. Stevens was then pastor. Besides his wife, Dr. Stevens is survived by three daughters, Mrs. Russell R. Mohn of Pasadena, Miss Frances H. Stevens of Fresno, and Mrs. E. Ross Harrington of Redondo Beach, and by four grandchildren.
