Captain Johnson of the 4 Ohio Cavalry was with the Federal Troops that captured Huntsville during the Civil War. After the war, he returned to Cincinnati, Ohio. The Johnson family visited Huntsville in 1891 and moved to Huntsville sometime later. Then Johnson's relocated to Denver, after the marriage of William Burritt and James' daughter Pearl they moved back to Huntsville. Pearl died from complications following surgery in 1898. Following Pearl's death, Dr. Burritt and Captain Johnson remained close and Capt. Johnson managed several of Burritt's business affairs.Captain James R. Johnson, in a Democratic convention, for Madison County, Alabama, put in a nomination for Tax Collector of Madison County, Andrew J. Esslinger, who was nominated and elected, serving four years from 1892 to 1896.
