John B. Sandefur, a long time resident of Colorado Springs, passed away April 4, 2012 at age 87. John was a continuous Colorado Springs resident following his discharge from active service in the U.S. Marine Corp. He continued his service for 17-1/2 years in the USMC reserves, attaining the rank of Major. He was a graduate of Northern Colorado University and was a teacher in SD-11, Colorado Springs, Colorado from 1950 until his retirement. He was a long time member of the Nob Hill Lions Clubs, a Melvin Jones Fellow, and a former Mason. John was also a 61-year supporter of the Grace Episcopal Church. John is survived by a son, William L. Sandefur of Kearny, Arizona; a granddaughter, Sara Sandefur of Denver, Colorado; a sister, C. Joan Myers Chaney of Baltimore, Maryland; a brother, Donald J. Sandefur of Peoria, Arizona; a sister-in-law, Katrina Patterson; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his wife of 48 years, Iris; two sons: John, Jr., and Brian; a daughter, Elizabeth; a brother, Harold T. Sandefur; and a sister, Frances M. Brown.
