"At the outbreak of the Civil War he enlisted in the Confederate service as an orderly sergeant under General Sterling Price, and rose in rank until at the close of the war he was a captain. He took part in the engagements at Boonville, Lexington, Dry Wood, Glasgow, Independence and Westport. In connection with his reputation for bravery as a soldier, and his habit of smoking, one of his soldier associates related that in a charge at battle, the order was given to retreat. My father and this companion were well out in front and for a time failed to get the message and suddenly found themselves alone in the rain of bullets. Before reaching safety this friend, Mr. Mansfield, saw my father stop, and he thought he had been shot, but to his amazement my father had stopped only to light his pipe.

He received his discharge at Shreveport, Louisiana, July 5, 1865. He was with Company F, Slayback's Regiment, Missouri Cavalry GMA CSA"
