William E. Walker was the son of John J. Walker Jr and Belle Taylor Walker.
According to the story published in the Augusta Chronicle dated 8 April 1943, he was attacked on 7 April 1943. He subsequently died exactly 2 weeks later from the injuries inflicted upon his person. The suspect was never charged for the attack and following death (homicide).
"William Walker, Negro, of 922 Carrie Street, was in a serious condition at the University hospital last night (7 April 1943), having sustained a concussion of the brain when he fell on a brick in front of a store at 1125 Ninth street. The officers said that Walker went into the place about 4 p.m. and when he brushed past Bert Colbert the latter told him to, "pull your knife and start cutting," and at the same time shoved Walker out of the door and into the street. In falling the Negro struck his forehead on a brick. He was immediately carried to the hospital where attaches said he sustained a concusion of the brain. Colbert had not been arrested up to late last night."
Mr. Walker was a religious man who worked as a porter for the Pullman Company.
