"The Families of Whatley et al", p. 58:

"Vachal enlisted at Antioch, GA 9 July 1861
as a private in Co. F, 21st Regiment Georgia Infantry, C.S.A., which was a unit in the Second Army Corps,
Army of Northern Virginia, Lt. Gen. Jubal A. Early, commanding August,1864.

He was in Dole's Brigade, Col. Wm. H. Peeples, commander. On 20 Aug. 1864 his unit was in Cook's Brigade,
commanded by Col. John T. Mercer. Known as
"The Army of the Valley District,"
the Shenandoah Valley Campaign began in earnest with a skirmish near Stone Chapel, Virginia on 10 Aug. 1864.

"The army continued north with a skirmish
practically every day. Vachal was killed 23 Sept. 1864 at Woodstock, Virginia, where he is buried."

Note : Vachal D Whatley was buried At Massanutten Cemetery
at Woodstock, Virginia but was later removed to
"Our Soldier Cemetery" at Mount Jackson, Virginia
