Mary Margaret Mathena, 82, died Saturday, Dec. 27, 2003, at the Vintage Manor, where she was a resident.
Mrs. Mathena owned and operated the Dinette Cafe on West Sixth Avenue; earlier she worked at Blaylock's Cafe. She retired several years ago.
The daughter of Thomas C. and Bessie P Hanks Phillips, she was born Aug. 25, 1921, in Chase County. She married Frank J. "Bud," Mathena on April 3, 1948, in Great Bend. He died Nov. 5, 1995.
Mrs. Mathena was a member of the Cornerstone Baptist Church. She also was a member of the Emporia Fireman's Auxiliary, the Newman Regional Health Auxiliary and the American Legion Post 5 Auxiliary.
She is survived by a son, Ronald Clark of Emporia, and a brother, Thomas C. Phillips Jr. of Texas. Two sons died in infancy. A brother and a sister also died earlier.
The funeral was Dec. 30, 2003, in the Cornerstone Baptist Church. The Rev. James Scott of the church conducted the service. Burial was in Memorial Lawn Cemetery, Emporia.
