Mrs. Kathryn Conaway, of artist family, dies at 80
Mrs. Kathryn Alley Conaway, member of a well-known family of political cartoonists and artists, died Friday at Wesley Hiland Manor after a long illness. She was 80.
Mrs. Conaway, an artist whose works were exhbited locally and regionally, was the daughter of the late J P Alley, political cartoonist for The Commercial Appeal from 1914 until his death in 1934.
Alley shared the 1923 Pulitzer Prize won for The Commercial Appeal's fight against the Ku Klux Klan and was creator of "Hambone's Meditations," a long running cartoon in the newspaper.
Mrs. Conaway's brother, Cal Alley, was the newspaper's political cartoonist from 1945 until his death in 1970. Her nephew, Rick Alley, is the newspaper's graphics editor.
Mrs. Conaway, widow of Frank E Conaway, an engineer who died in January 1987, was a member of Beaux Arts, the Le Bonheur Club and several art groups.
She leaves three sons, Frank E. Conaway, Jr of Unionville, N Y, James A Conaway of Washington, and Daniel E Conaway of Memphis; a sister Mrs. Elizabeth Alley Ahlgren of Memphis, wife of Frank Ahlgren, retired editor of The Commercial Appeal; and seven grandchildren.
Graveside serices will be at 11 a.m. Monday at Memorial Park Cemetery, Memorial Park Funeral Home has charge. The family requests any memorials be sent to the Memphis Arts Council.
