m1 Lucy McWain/McElwain (4 May 1770-7 Nov 1803) on 8 February 1789 in Putmanville VT (no town by that name, possible transcription error as it most likely should be Putney where they both lived)

m2 Betsey Cambridge on 13 Jul 1806 at Dummerston VT
Children:
- Horace Black (-28 Mar 1808)
- Lucy McWain Black (24 Oct 1808-3 Aug 1846) m Humphrey George Starr
- Eliza Adaline Black (8 Aug 1811 – 9 Jul 1816)
- Asa E Black (1817-3 Sep 1847)

1806 Asa is listed as a postal agent (with Phinehas White) for Putney where he was a tavern keeper.

About 1807, he bought a house lot with a dwelling (built by Simeon Colby in 1794) from Ebenezer Ash in Dummerston VT and kept a public house there for about seven years. In 1810 he bought (from the town) additional land upon which he built Dummerston's first store. Asa Black sold the store, with almost 12 square rods of land in 1811 to traders Joshua Tyler and Josiah Hastings (both of Chesterfield NH). In 1814, Asa Black sold his house and land at the south end of the common to the firm Noyes & Hayes and the family of Rutherford Hayes (father of President Rutherford B Hayes) took possession immediately. The Rutherfords moved to Ohio in 1817.

Vermont is given as his birth place in three records.
