Born at the family estate, "The Hill." Went to school at the Academy in Port Royal, a well regarded institution. Married, 1783, Catherine Gilchrist Miller. After the death of his father, they moved to "The Hill" where they had nine children. James Bowie was a wealthy man. In addition to his land interests, James Bowie was part owner of large flour mills in Port Royal which he gave his personal supervision, even when an old man. While inspecting some work in the mill, he reproved a negro man, and the man grew insolent so much so that James Bowie ordered him punished. That evening as the old gentleman was returning home alone on horseback, the Negro waylaid him, dragged him from his horse, and after strangling him, threw the body in a deep pond near the road. His shouts for help had been heard, and friends hurried to the spot, but were not in time to prevent the killing of the feeble old man. His body was quickly recovered and a large reward was offered for the apprehension of the murderer, both by the state of Virginia and by his son. The negro man was never caught.
