Charles Ashmun, 95, of Basking Ridge, N.J., died on Saturday, March 31, 2012, at Fellowship Village Care Center in Basking Ridge. Funeral service will be at St. Bernard's Episcopal Church, Bernardsville, N.J., on Tuesday, April 10, at 11 a.m. Private burial will be at St. Bernard's Cemetery, Bernardsville. Arrangements are by Layton Funeral Home, 475 Main St., Bedminster. Mr. Ashmun was born in Newark, N.J., on Feb. 8, 1917, a son of the late Charles and Mary Belcher Ashmun. He resided in Bedminster for 40 years and Far Hills, N.J., for 12 years before moving to Basking Ridge 16 years ago. Mr. Ashmun had a fondness for Far Hills and the Somerset Hills area, where his Belcher relatives have lived for over a hundred years. He was a graduate of the Kent School in Kent, Conn., and a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II, serving from 1942 to 1945. Mr. Ashmun had a 42-year career with the Buckeye Pipe Line Company in New York City, having risen from digging ditches to vice president and manager of the traffic department in charge of product traffic all through the system when he retired in 1979. He was a member and treasurer and served on the Vestry of St. Bernard's Episcopal Church in Bernardsville; a board member of the Somerset Lake and Game Club and the Upper Raritan Watershed Association, and treasurer of the Fellowship Village Residents Council. He was predeceased by a brother, Marine Captain George M. Ashmun, during World War II, and by two step-brothers, Gayle and Alfred Young.

Mr. Ashmun is survived by his wife of 65 years, Candace McKee Ashmun; a daughter, Elizabeth A. Ansley of Raleigh, N.C.; two sons, Charles Ashmun III of Edgartown, Mass. and Geord M. Ashmun of Orange, VA; a brother, John R. Ashmun of Houston, Texas; eight grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
