Levi's father is Moses Cantrell born October 28, 1800, Spartanburg County, SC; he died May 18, 1872 at Farmington, St Francois County, MO. Levi's mother is Martha Bowles Cantrell born 1804 in Virginia, she died in 1889, St Francois County, MO.

The 1850 District 80, St Francois County, MO Census lists LD Cantrell, 26, and wife Shelen, 26, both born in Tennessee, with daughter Mary E, 2, born in Georgia(?). Levi is a shoemaker.

The Soldiers' Records of the Missouri State Archives has Levi D Cantrell enlisted and mustered in March 24, 1862 in Springfield during the Civil War. He was a Private, Company D, with Captain Wilson. Under remarks the record states he was transfered to Company K.

The 1860 Dade County, MO Census shows Levi and his wife Shelan, both age 35. Levi is a house carpenter. He lives next door to Benjamin A Cantrell, age 34, born in Tennessee; and Elijah Cantrell, age 66, born in South Carolina. Elijah is Levi's uncle and a brother of his father Moses.

In 1860 the children of Levi and Shelan born in Tennessee are Marietta, age 14, and Lucy (middle name Ann), age 12. Their children born in Missouri are: Virginia, age 10, Samuel S, age 6, Peora (Peoria F), age 4, and Sarah A (Adelina), age 1.

The 1880 Dade County, MO Census has Levi D, age 58, a carpenter; Shelin P, his wife, age 58, both born in Tennessee; and Levi (Eli) C, their son, age 19, born in Missouri, a laborer.

From the Dade County Advocate, July 31, 1890 -- The services to Levi Cantrell of Dadeville have been secured to superintend the barbecuing of the meat for August 14th. Mr. Cantrell is well known by all by our old citizens and his reputation in this line is "par excellence."

"Shelen" Cantrell filed for widow status November 6, 1891 after Levi's death, so we know she outlived him. Shelan's date of death and grave site is unknown. One online source spelled her maiden name "Sheiland Blackburn."
