FILED AN OLD DEED
Among the deed's filed at the registrar & recorders office yesterday has one from Abram Lawshe and his wife to Thomas Ruffhead and wife for a lot of land in Jersey Shore, It was dated Jan 11 1856. The consideration was $700. The deed was drawn and acknowledged by by Justice of the Peace Robert McGowan. It is written on a single sheet of paper and folded differently than those of the present day. It is readable and well preserved for having been stood 57 years of wear and tear. The deed was filed by John T Hyatt attorney for the present purchaser.
History of Lycoming County by J F Meginnes:
Abraham Lawshe was born in New Jersey Dec 16 1780, son of John & Eleanor (Chamberlain) Lawshe . His parents died in Derrstown now know as Lewisburg, the father Feb 7 1832 and the mother July 4 1817. In 1786 his parents removed to Cumberland County (now Perry) and in 1792 Abraham went to York County where he served 5 years at the tanner's and currier's trade. From 1798-1800 he was employed as a journeyman. He then went to Canada returning in May 1801 to Lewisburg. In April 1803 he came to Jersey Shore and purchased a small tannery which he carried on for 40 years. He also engaged in farming ans was one of the leading businessmen of that locality. In November 1806 he married Elizabeth Baily born Aug 20 1786 the daughter of John & Hannah Bailey.Their children were Hannah who died young, Eleanor widow of John A Gamble, Lucretia A wife of George Quiggle, Rebecca B wife of John Crist,Elizabeth widow of Isaac Bodine and Sarah C wife of Allison White. Mrs. Lawshe died June 19 1823 and July 1 1824 he married Anna H Hamilton born Aug 5 1798 daughter of Robert & Anna Hamilton of Pine Creek township. Anna bore him two sons and three daughters as follows: Robert H of Jersey Shore, John of Williamsport, Anna A wife of Thomas McCurdy of Jersey Shore,Priscilla H wife of J Appleton Wilson of Lock Haven and M Eley wife of Robert Wilson of Jersey Shore. Mr. Lawshe was a man of good business ability and accumulated a handsome competence. He was an elder in the Presbyterian Church,a Democrat. He lived in harmony with his neighbors and died Feb 10 1862 at the ripe old age of 81. His wife survived him until Oct 24 1884.
