His birth name is John Franklin Cogburn, but he went by Frank. As a younger man he was also known, but less so, as Rooster. Frank was born in Montgomery County, Arkansas, the son of John Wesley Cogburn of Tennessee and Miss Mary B. "Alyora" White of Georgia. John Wesley Cogburn died in 1868, place of burial unknown. In 1870, Mary married Carter Markham, but she died in 1873, the place of her burial also unknown.
