East Side News: Useful Career of Rev. W. C. Crawford--Odd Fellows' Anniversary (News Article)

Rev. W.C. Crawford, a prominent member of the Cumberland Presbyterian Church of this state, and a high Mason, died at his home Tuesday night, corner of East Morrison and East Tenth streets, after a somewhat protracted illness. Mr. Crawford lived a quiet but useful life during the 30 years he had been in Oregon, and his chief concern was for the welfare and happiness of others. He was born at Viney Grove, Ark., May 13, 1850 and had little opportunity for acquiring education. With his parents he came to Oregon in 1870, settling in Oregon City. In 1872 he entered the Corvallis College, and graduated in the scientific course in 1875, accomplishing in two years what usually takes four years. He resided at Corvallis untl he moved to Portland in 1890, where he lived ever since. He became a minister of the Cumberland Presbyterian Church, doing transient work, but was not on any fixed station. For great many years he was general secretary of the Oregon Synod of the Cumberland Presbyterian Church, and afterwards was made secretary of the Portland Presbytery. From both these positions he was compelled to resign a short time ago on account of ailing health. Both bodies accepted his resignation with reluctance, as his great care and faithfulness were well known in that denomination. He has been a prominent member of the Portland (East Side) Cumberland Presbyterian Church.

In the Masonic order Mr. Crawford attained a high standard. He joined Corvallis Lodge, No. 14, A.F. & A.M., a great many years ago and then attained all the honors that the order could offer him. He was master of the Corvallis lodge for a long time. He was also a high priest of the chapter, and had been a thrice illustrious master. He joined the Knights Templar at Eugene City. He retained his membership in the Corvallis lodge. At his request he will be buried Friday at Oregon City by the side of his father and mother, and the services will be in charge of the Multnomah Lodge, No. 1 A.F.& A.M., of Oregon City.

A wife and four sons survive the deceased, the latter being William Carl, Ellis M., Bryon E. and Clarence V. Crawford, Mrs. M. Howell and Mrs. N. Edmunston, of Oregon City, are the sisters.
