He joined the Marine Corps in November 2007 and was promoted to the rank of corporal in March 2011. He deployed to Afghanistan in support of Operation Enduring Freedom from May to September 2009 and again from January to August 2011. Among his military awards and decorations were the Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal; Afghanistan Campaign Medal; Global War on Terrorism Service Medal; National Defense Service Medal; and NATO Medal-ISAF Afghanistan.

He was predeceased by his father, James B Blankenship; his grandmother, Myrtle Blankenship; his grandfather, William DeWalt; and two Marines that he referred to as his brothers, CPL Kyle Schneider and John Taylor. He was survived by his mother; his brother and sister-in-law; his wife and stepdaughter; one grandfather and one grandmother; two nephews; one niece; and many aunts, uncles, and cousins.

Visitation and funeral services were held at Honaker Funeral Home, Slidell, LA on Wednesday, March 21, 2012. Interment on April 3, 2012.
