Born at Malone, New York on 1 December 1865, son of William A. and Florence E. Caye, he was educated at St. Albans, Vermont. He commenced a career in the passenger department of the Central Vermont Railway at St. Albans, in 1882. He was Travelling Car Agent with the Canada Atlantic Railway from 1900 to 1902, Private Secretary to the General Manager of the same road from 1903 to 1905, Chief Clerk to the Vice-President and General Manager, Grand Trunk Pacific Railway (Montreal) from 1905 to 1907, and transferred to Winnipeg in 1907 where he was Assistant to the Vice-President and General Manager, and Purchasing Agent, for the Grand Trunk Pacific Railway.

In 1910, he married Florence E. Van Fleet of New York City. He was a member of the Knights of Columbus. His recreations included hunting and fishing. Roman Catholic. Address: Moxam Court, Winnipeg.
