In 1866, Aris and Tettje emigrated from The Netherlands to Michigan, USA. Aris went first in March of 1866 and Tettje followed with the children in August of 1866. According to the "Staat van landverhuizers" (status of immigrants) they were well-to-do. In Texel, Aris was a cattle farmer and the Ottawa County Michigan Index of 1892-93 is also listing him as a farmer.
Tettje wrote a letter to Aris before she left The Netherlands, the content of which is pictured at right.
