Myrta Virginia Baker, daughter of Ira G. and Susan Hammer Baker, was born near West Liberty, April 24, 1866, and passed away at the home of her daughter, Mrs. C. Earl Smith, May 4, 1946. At the time of her death, she was 80 years and 10 days old. She was the 3rd in the family of 5 children.
At 5 years of age her mother died and until she was 16 she made her home with her uncle and aunt, Mr. and Mrs. John LaRue near Downey. She received her early education at the Linn Grove School.
She was united in marriage October 23, 1889, to Homer C. Swain and to them were born four daughters, Helen, Verna, Edith and Charlotte. On February 18, 1908, her husband died, leaving her the responsibility of rearing the family. Mrs. Swain spent her entire life in this community and has been a member of the Methodist Church for 64 years. She was also a charter member of the Pythian Sisters lodge, and took an active part in both organizations as long as her health permitted.
