He married first Franke Hicks, a daughter of Ira Hicks, in 1886 who gave birth to Lloyd Richards. Franke died three years later in 1889. Sadly, Lloyd died in 1893. Jack went to Sioux City, Iowa, in 1897. He returned to Kalamazoo and on January 4, 1898 married his second wife Rose Thurles Thompson (b. 1871, d. 1954), daughter of William and Jeanette Thompson, both emigres from England. Shortly after they married they returned to Sioux City where he was a foreman of the trim shop of the Sioux City Iron Company for 22 years. After that, he went into business for himself as the owner of The Richards Auto Top Company in Sioux City. They had only one child, Rose Colburn Richards, born November 16, 1900; she died, unmarried, in Sioux City in 1992.
