Anna was born out of wedlock to Inger Marthea Olsdatter and Johan Pettersen in Nordre Land, Norway. She immigrated to the US in 1888 arriving in New York on 28 December. She spent the next two years in Pomeroy Iowa working off the cost of her trip; then moved to Sioux City Iowa where she met and married Rasmus Mortensen on 13 Nov 1890 in Dakota City, NE. They had 11 children (10 of which lived to become adults). She died of cancer in Lutheran Hospital in Sioux City.
