OBITUARY.
DAVID C. GRAHAM.
On Saturday evening last at the hospital in Cresco, D. C. Graham passed away, death being due to perforation of the bowels, caused by an ulcer. Something more than a year ago Mr. Graham was seriously ill with some stomach trouble from which he apparently recovered, but during the past few weeks he was not feeling as well as usual. On Wednesday last he became ill while at the Milwaukee depot and went to his home near by. He continued to grow worse and Friday night he was taken to the Cresco hospital. His condition proved proved{sic} so serious that no hope was extended to his family for his recovery. The chance that an operation might save his life was taken and he passed through it in much better condition than expected, but two hours later he began to fail and he died between eight and nine o'clock.
David Collins Graham was born May 25, 1847, at Yorkville, Racine Co., Wis., where he grew to manhood. In 1869 he moved to Portage, where he resided until 1874 when he came to Decorah and resided for four years, returning to Wisconsin and caring for his parents until their death. He returned to Decorah in February, 1891, and has since retained his home here.
Mr. Graham was thrice married. His first wife was Emma Rood, to whom he was married in 1869 to{sic} Portage, Wis. Her death occurred on January 14, 1886. He was married to Mary L. Maltby on February 16, 1888, who passed away on March 10, 1893. Nellie Maltby, who survives him, became his wife on April 26, 1896. He is also survived by five children—Mrs. Wm. Thompson and Mrs. Robert H. Miller of Decorah, and George Wallace Graham of Spokane, Wash., by his first marriage, and Byron and Roger by his second marriage. He is also survived by one brother and one sister—Thomas Graham of Decorah and Mrs. Mary Rood of Chicago.
During the greater part of his life Mr. Graham was a farmer. Shortly after returning to Decorah in 1891 he engaged in the draying business and to this he has given the larger part of his attention. He was elected three times as a member of the city council, having just entered upon his third term. He was a man of jovial disposition, ever ready for a joke or a hearty laugh, and by a host of friends and acquaintances this characteristic will always be held in memory.
The funeral was held at the home Tuesday afternoon, Rev. H. H. Green officiating, and interment was made in Phelps cemetery, the Masons taking charge at the grave. The attendance was unusually large and bespoke the sympathy that was felt for the family in their bereavement.
