Son of Spanish immigrants Antonio and Concepcion Gayaldo, Joaquin grew up on a farm in Rocklin, California, and enlisted in the US Army on April 24, 1943 in Sacramento. At the age of 23, he was killed in action at Biak Island in the South Pacific. His remains were returned home February 1949 for re-burial. Besides his parents, he was survived by three sisters, Carnation, Marie and Constance; and four brothers, Tony, Frank, Joe, and Henry.
