Catherine Pittenger Stryker was the daughter of Dennis and Margaret Stevens Stryker of Somerset County, New Jersey. She married John C Hammer in 1831. The family moved to Michigan briefly and then settled in the West Liberty area about 1859. They had six children, David, Abraham, Susan Jane, Dennis, Mary Deliah and Sarah Virginia. The family was very poor and following her death, no stone was placed to mark her grave, nor was the plot paid for. The grave was re-sold and another person buried in the plot in 1966. Descendants installed a new gravestone for her next to her husband, John, albeit on the wrong side.
