Adelaide or Judith of Paris
Daughter of the Count Palatine Adalard of Paris. She was the great granddaughter of Begon, Count of Paris, and Alpais, the illegitimate daughter of Louis the Pious.
She was the second wife of Louis the Stammerer, King of Western Francia, and the mother of Charles the Simple and one duaghter, Ermetrude.
Charles the Bald, King of the Franks, chose Adelaide as a wife for his son, Louis, not knowing Louis had already married Ansgarde of Burgundy secretly, and had produced two sons, Louis and Carloman. Charles went to the pope to dissolve the marriage, then married his son to Adelaide in February of 875. Their kinship was later questioned as they were related through Charlemagne. When Pope John VIII crowned Louis as King of the Franks of September 7, 878, he refused to crown Adelaide as queen. Louis died April 10, 879 with no male issue from Adelaide although she was pregnant with Charles the Simple, who was born September 17, 879. The dispute between Adelaide and Ansgarde ended in favor of Adelaide, yet Ansgarde's sons would become kings in turn. Charles the Simple did finally become king in 898.
Adelais of Paris died in Laon on 10 November 901. She was buried in the Abbey of Saint-Corneille, Compiègne, Picardy, France.∼Adelaide was the daughter of Adalhard De Paris (830-890).
