Traer Star Clipper, Friday, April 4th, 1913 page 1
Wife of Traer Grocer Succumbs to Cancer of Stomach.
Mrs. Ernest Gehl died Saturday night at her home in Traer after an illness covering several months. Her trouble was supposed to have been cancer of the stomach, which made exceedingly rapid progress the past few weeks. The patient was favored with a comparative freedom from suffering, unusual in such cases, which was a comfort to her family. Deceased was a native of Germany, where she was born February 10, 1868. She was reared in girlhood in Hamburg. At the age of fourteen she came to America with her relatives, who located in Tama county. Here she has since made her home. March 22, 1884, she married Ernest Gehl and three years later they moved from the Oneida farm to Traer, where they have resided since. A new modern home had not yet been completed, in which the family had planned so much comfort, when the fatal disease made itself manifest. Deceased leaves three children, Misses Martha and Minnie and Harry, who with the husband, mourn an untimely death. Mrs. Gehl was a lady greatly admired by her acquaintances and much beloved by those who knew her best. She was confirmed in the Lutheran church when a girl, but as no society of this faith existed in Traer, the family allied themselves with the Congregational church here. The funeral services were at the home Monday and were conducted by Rev. Gonzales. They were very brief. Burial was in West Union.
