John Kirby was born in Illinois, but grew up in Iowa after the family moved to Wayne County in 1865. He married Marilda "Rilda" Chapman around 1878, and in 1880 they had a daughter and were living in Corydon, IA with John working in hardware sales. In 1900 they lived in Seymour in Wayne Co., had four daughters, and John was a traveling salesman. Rilda died in 1904, and John married again. In 1910 he had been married to Etta Miskinnis for 4 years, and they lived in Centerville City, IA, with John a partner in a retail store. By 1920 John and Etta were living in Escondido, San Diego County, California, where John worked in a grocery store. At the time of the 1930 Census John had become a real estate broker.
