Hosea was one of 9 children (3 died as infants) born to William Henry and Mary Frances (Brauer) Herrick. The family moved from Indiana to Ohio while Hosea was a teenager. He was still living at home at the age of 24, working as a laborer in the building industry. At some point he moved back to Indiana, where he worked as a laborer for a packing plant. He married Ethel N. Mefford. They had at least 2 children: Iva M. and Claude Francis Herrick. Hosea died at the age of 57 years.
