Neal Ray enlisted in the war between the states in its early stages. As part of company D, 7th battalion of the SC Volunteers, Neal served under Brigadier General Johnson Hagood. Neal participated in the Siege at Petersburg, Virginia where he spent 68 days in trench warfare. Company D, also known as the "Kershaw Grays" was formed in Kershaw district, SC and was mustered near Columbia, SC on January 2, 1862. Their commander was Captain John L. Jones. After the company disbanded, Neal walked from Goldsboro, North Carolina to his home in what is now Lugoff, South Carolina. Horses were available to soldiers through a lottery system, but there was no food to feed them and Neal preferred to walk home. Nearing Lugoff he passed an acquaintance on the road who, because of Neal's physical condition, did not recognize him. Neal bathed in a local spring not far from Pine Grove, burned his clothes, and returned home.
