Son of Charles Griffin and Sallie (Carroll) Griffin. He died in a yellow fever epidemic in Galveston, five days shy of his fifth birthday and just a few days before his father died of the same disease. His mother, later married Count Ezterhazy of Hungary and lived out her life in Europe. Had a brother William who died in infancy in 1864.

This family crypt is the one that Willie Lincoln's body rested in until he went "home" to Springfield with his father, President Abraham Lincoln.
