Lewis M. Simmons was the son of John L. Simmons and Mary Rosilla Fletcher. In 1900 at the age of 14 he lived with his family on the farm in Rockwell County, Texas. During that time, he helped on the farm and also attended school. On Nov 11, 1905, he enlisted in Muskogee, Indian Territory "Oklahoma" with the U.S. Army, 29th Battery. He would later receive a dishonorable discharge for deserting on December 9, 1906, while stationed at Fort Leavenworth, Kansas. After his military time, he returned to Oklahoma to again live with his parents, and in 1910 was living in Devol Township, Oklahoma. There he resided with his family, doing odd jobs for money. Not long after he married and had children. In 1930 he was living with his wife Ellen, and 4 kids in Oklahoma. During this 1930 residency his occupation was that of a blacksmith, in which he most've learned the trade from his father who also was not just a farmer but also a blacksmith.
