Italian immigrant, Maria Petti-Valentino, also known as Mary, a lifelong resident of Newark, New Jersey, died on Friday, September 3, 1965 at Clara Maass Hospital, 1 Clara Maass Drive, Belleville, New Jersey after a short liver illness. She was 59 years old. She was buried at Holy Cross Cemetery in North Arlington, New Jersey on Tuesday, September 7, 1965.

She was born in Nocera Inferiore, Italy, on July 9, 1906. Nocera Inferiore, is a town located in the Campania region of Italy (Southern Italy), in the Sarno River Valley, just northwest of Salerno.

Maria was the beloved daughter of Italian immigrants, Raffaele (Ralph) Petti and Teresa (Tessie) LaMagna-Petti, who were also born in Nocera Inferiore, Italy.

On Friday, February 22, 1907, at the age of 7 months, Maria left her native Italy on the S.S. Buenos Aires which departed from Naples, Italy, with her 43 year old mother Teresa and 13 year old sister Gaetana a/k/a Anna, who was also born in Nocera Inferiore.

They arrived in Ellis Island on Wednesday, March 13, 1907 where they were met by Maria's father, 38 year old Raffaele, who had only arrived 6 months earlier in the United States for the first time through Ellis Island on the S.S. Vincenzio Floria from Napoli, Italy on Saturday, March 24, 1906.

Raffaele set sail from Napoli on Tuesday, March 6, 1906, leaving behind his wife Teresa, who was 3 months pregnant with Maria, and their 13 year old daughter Gaetana.

After Raffaele, who was a mason by trade, reached Ellis Island, with $12 in his pocket, he was met by Teresa's brother. From New York City, they traveled to Teresa's brother's apartment on East Kinney Street, in Newark, New Jersey. There Raffaele worked hard to bring his family to America to start their new life.

Maria was predeceased by her cherished parents, who both died in Newark, New Jersey, as well as by her infant daughter Linda Valentino who was only 5 days old when she died on Tuesday, February 28, 1950, also in Newark, New Jersey and was buried on Wednesday, March 1, 1950.

Surviving Maria were her loving husband of 38 years, Daniel Valentino, Sr., of Newark, New Jersey and their 9 devoted children Rose Valentino-Pittman, Joseph Valentino, Theresa Valentino-Molinari, Daniel Paul Valentino, Jr., Raffaele Valentino, Leonardo Valentino, Sr., and Alfred Daniel Valentino, as well as four grandsons and two granddaughters.

Maria was also survived by her two devoted sisters Gaetana (Anna) Petti-Lamberti and Jenni Petti-Stoia.

Maria's youngest sister Jenni Petti-Stoia, was born in Newark, New Jersey on Tuesday, December 13, 1910. As with her sister Maria, Jenni too remained a lifelong resident of Newark, New Jersey before she died on Monday, January 20, 2003.
