2003 Obituary
Marilyn Mattsson "M2" "Matt" "Matty Darling" Marilyn Mattsson died on April 25, 2003, in Baltimore, MD. She was born on June 2, 1934, at her grandfather's hospital in Montpelier, ID, the first child of Wanda Ashley and Carvel Mattsson. "Matty," as she was affectionately known, will be greatly missed by her sister, Melinda (Mike) Fowler, Portland, OR; her brothers, J. Michael (Mary) Mattsson, Salt Lake City, UT; and Marc (Barbara) Mattsson, Houston, TX; and many nieces and nephews.

Matty grew up in Richfield, UT, and from an early age was recognized for her extraordinary academic and musical abilities. She was especially gifted in writing and editing and loved literature. Matty attended the University of Utah, where she was president of the Tri-Delt Sorority and of Panhellenic as well as editor of the "Daily Utah Chronicle." She graduated from the "U" in English Literature with High Honors in 1956, being named to Beehive, Phi Kappa Phi, and Phi Beta Kappa honor societies. !

In 1964, Matty obtained her M.A. degree in Clinical Psychology, also with High Honors. Matty married Morris Buckwalter in 1956. Coaching jobs took them to many U.S. cities where they enjoyed the glory days of college basketball.

After she and Morris were divorced, Matty embarked on a new adventure: moving herself and all of her belongings in a U-Haul to Baltimore, MD. She began a new life and career there, rekindling college friendships and making a wide circle of dear friends in her "second home." In Baltimore, Matty expertly managed and produced several scholarly journals. Matty kept in close contact with her family and friends via phone and email, and she always loved coming "home" to Utah for holidays and trips to the family cabin in Fish Lake. Matty's dedication to family and friends was powerful. Being in her company was endlessly stimulating. Matty, first and foremost of the "Four M's," will be sorely missed.
