Victim of Cancer Peter Barnato Dies; Diamond Heir

Peter Woolf Barnato, 25, an heir to the Kimberly Diamond Mine fortune, died in Marin County General Hospital early yesterday morning of cancer.

The prominent young socialite, a Marin County real estate salesman, had been ill for a year and a half.

Born in London, he was brought here as a baby by his father, Capt. Woolf Barnato and mother, the former Jackie Quealy of San Francisco.

The voyage from London was shrouded in secrecy because of threats made against young Barnato's life by members of an international kidnappers' ring. In New York the family was given a bodyguard of Department of Justice agents at the request of the British government.

He attended Lowell High School, where he broke several city swimming records, and the University of California.

In Dec., 1954, he was married to Gloria Marie Duncan in a fashionable ceremony at St. John's Episcopal Church in Ross.

With his brother, Michael, he shared the millions amassed in South Africa by his grandfather, the late Barney I. Barnato.
In addition to his wife and brother, he is survived by two children, Lisa Marie, 2, and Peter Jr., 1, of Fairfax; his mother, Mrs. Arvid Norman of San Francisco, and his maternal grandmother, Mrs. J. A. Quealy of San Francisco.

Funeral services are pending at Martin and Brown Mortuary, 2200 Sutter St.

The family has requested memorial donations to the Marin County General Hospital.
