Olen Cockrell, age 88, of Monticello went to be with his Lord on Thursday, March 29, 2012, at his home in Monticello.

He was born March 9, 1924 in the Green Hill community to the late Earl Cockrell and Vera Ray Cockrell.

He was the retired owner of Cockrell's Shoes, a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II and was a member of the Pauline Missionary Baptist Church where he served as Deacon, past Sunday School Superintendent and church treasurer.

He was also preceded in death by brothers Delbert, Elmon and James Cockrell and a sister Jessie Johnson.

Mr. Cockrell was a graduate of Drew Central High School and attended Arkansas A&M College. He was a past member of the Monticello School Board, Monticello Kiwanis Club where he was the oldest charter member, Drew County Chamber of Commerce Board, past president of the Monticello Retail Merchants Association, past director of the Drew County March of Dimes, past secretary/treasurer of the Monticello Economic Development Commission, former member of the Monticello City Council, and the Pink Tomato Board. Mr. Cockrell received the Hannah Hyatt Award given by the Arkansas Baptist Home for his service to children in 1996 and was the Monticello Man of the Year in 2004.

His retail background in Monticello spans back some 70 years. He was employed at The Leader in 1942 before being drafted into the U.S. Navy in 1943 where he served for 32 months. Upon returning back to Monticello he enrolled at Arkansas A&M College in 1946. He was then employed at Allen and Mitchell Grocery in 1947 before becoming employed at Magness Shoe Store in February of 1949. Magness Shoe Store would become Cockrell�s Shoe Store a few years later where Mr. Cockrell served the people of Monticello for some 47 years. He worked part time until his retirement in September of 1998.

He is survived by his wife of 61 years, Sue Riley Cockrell of Monticello; three daughters, Suzanne Hamblen and husband David of Russelleville, Jane Jo Summerford and husband Wayne of Ray, ND, and Sarah Martin and husband John of Monticello; six grandchildren, Nathan Hamblen of Bella Vista, Josh Hamblen and wife Jessie of Chattanooga, TN, Casey Bone of Little Rock, Tyler Martin of Monticello, Lana Martin of Louisiana and Lauren Stutts and husband Daniel of Spokan, WA; four great grandchildren, Gracen Bone, Madden Stutts, David and Lily Hamblen; and many nieces and nephews.
