Another family story from his great-grandson is that James McCulloch came from Ireland to America with his friend Thomas Patterson during the days of the American Revolution. Their families had preceded them and gone out to settle in western Pennsylvania near Fort Pitt now known as Pittsburgh. They landed at Philadelphia, enlisted in the Continental Army, and fought through the Revolution. When it was over they made their way to Pittsburgh.
He was married to Anna (maiden name unknown) and they had four sons who survived to adulthood. James died intestate and his administration papers provide interesting information on the family.
1) His eldest son was William was born about 1893 and lived in New Orleans, Louisianna, at the time of his father's death. He married Mary Rickerman.
2) James McCulloch born 27 Mar 1785 and died four months before his father. He married Margaret Patterson, daughter of Thomas Patterson.
3) Samuel McCulloch, born about 1788 was in Buffalo, Armstrong, Pennsylvania, in August 1833 when he sold land inherited from his father.
4) John McCulloch, the youngest son, went to court requesting assistance in the division of his father James' estate. The heirs could not agree how much each son had been given during James' lifetime. As a result, the administration papers include a summary of his assets, what had been already given to each child, and a map of his land and how it was divided among his heirs.
In the 1830 census, James was listed as age 80-89 indicating he was born between 1741 and 1750.
