He was the son of Joseph Francis Niehaus Sr. and Frances Poelling. He married Evelyn Sueme on 17 June 1936 in St. Louis. They had three children: Jo Ann O.P, Ronald Roy and Thomas Joseph. He started his career with Price Waterhouse as an office boy in 1924 and then became a CPA in their St. Louis office, and later in their Houston office. He was a Comptroller for George w. Strake, an independent oil operator. He retired in 1993.
