A Civil War veteran, he enlisted in York August 28, 1861, mustered into federal service there September 11 as a private with Co. K, 87th Pennsylvania Infantry. He spent the last seven months of his service time on detached duty in Alexandria, Virginia, working in the machine shop for Col. D. C. McCallum, Military Director and Superintendent of U.S. Railroads. He honorably discharged at term's end October 13, 1864.
He married Amanda Howard February 7, 1867, but no children were found. He died in York Hospital, although Lock Haven, Clinton County is also reported, albeit it seems unlikely.
