Leonard was supposedly from Montgomery Co., N.C. and moved to Buncombe County as a young man. He married Mary Osborne, daughter of Jeremiah and Anne Blythe Osborne, on the 19th of January, 1819 in Buncombe Co., NC. They would have nine children: Nancy, Margaret, Charles, Anna, Ruth, Jane, Jacob, Rebecca and James Henry.
