Civil War: Company D, 11th Ohio Infantry

General Washington Shill as the son of Henry and Eliza (Owens) Shill of Tippecanoe County, Indiana. During the Civil War he enlisted as a private for 3 months at Camp Dennison, Ohio, April 26, 1861, and was mustered into Company D, 11th Ohio Infantry. He was mustered out on June 20, 1861, in order to re-enlist for 3 years that same day and be mustered back into Company D, 11th Ohio Infantry. Private Shill was mustered out at Camp Dennison June 21, 1864. He married Margaret Amanda Mathews. He filed for a Civil War veterans disability pension December 8, 1885, and received certificate No. 514,745. After his wife's death in 1901 he was admitted to the Pacific Branch, National Home for Disabled Volunteer Soldiers, at Sawtelle August 20, 1902. He died at his son Mathew's home in Fullerton while absent with leave from the soldiers' home. He was a stonecutter by profession.
