Abraham Blumer was born in Lehigh County, Pennsylvania, on December 20, 1866, to Owen Henry and Marie Christine Weber Blumer. Abraham Blumer's ancestors on both sides of his family had come to America from Switzerland. When Abraham was only 3 years-old, his mother and his only sibling (Christine Rose) contracted typhoid fever and died two days apart. Because of the fear of infectious disease being transmitted from dead bodies, both mother and daughter were interred in isolated and undisclosed locations which are no longer known. Following the death of Abraham's mother (Marie) and his sister (Christine), Abraham and his father (Owen) moved to the home of Abraham's paternal aunt and uncle Hannah & Joseph Young, who helped to raise Abraham to adulthood. Owen is buried in the Young family plot in Allentown, Pennsylvania. In 1881 (age 25) Abraham came west to Sutton, Nebraska, where he met and married Elizabeth Zimbelman in 1894 at the age of 28. Abraham and Elizabeth moved to a farm northeast of Harvard, Nebraska, where their only child Herta Christine Blumer was born on April 30, 1896. Abraham died following a short illness on the farm in 1901 at age of 34 years.
