Alva and her brother Virgil were raised by their grandparents, William Hillary and Mollie Poindexter after the death of their mother Annie Poindexter Clark from TB. Their father was unable to work and care for them so the grew up as siblings with their aunts and uncles.

Alva Clarke Johnson, Obituary: Commercial Appeal, The (Memphis, TN) - Wednesday, May 27, 1998 ALVA CLARKE JOHNSON, 91, of Little Rock, formerly of Memphis, former civil service employee for the federal government, died of respiratory failure Sunday at Baptist Medical Center in Little Rock. Services will be at 2 p.m. Friday at Memorial Park Funeral Home with burial in Memphis Memory Gardens. She was a member of Union Avenue Baptist Church and had been a Bible memorization teacher for the blind. Mrs. Johnson, the widow of Carl John Johnson, leaves a daughter, Anne Johnson Seymour of Chapel Hill, N.C.; a son, Dr. Philip Johnson of Little Rock; four half-sisters, Annie Jo Kemp of Nashville, Elise Humphrey of Spring Creek, Tenn., Sue Smith of Cedar Grove, Tenn., and Birdie Stanford of Huntingdon, Tenn.; a half-brother, John Albert Clarke; a stepsister, Marcia Wildridge, and a stepbrother, J. C.
